Video Conferencing is not just for the conference room anymore. Recent technological advances that have enabled video conferencing on smartphones, tablets and other BYOD platforms, combined with innovative new technologies that interface with these devices, have resulted in the proliferation of video in many applications that, until recently, were confined to audio-only interactions. There are two innovative, pervasive, and practical new uses of video conferencing that are changing the way professionals interact at the desktop and on the road.
1. Video Conferencing Outside of the Office Environment using BYOD and Smart Glasses
Communication between field personnel and their counterparts in office settings has traditionally taken place via an audio connection, usually via cell phone, walkie-talkie, etc. The ability to initiate a video conference with a smart phone has taken this technology out of the conference room and into the field. As users become comfortable with secure, HIPPA-compliant video conferencing outside of the traditional office setting, this technology is enhancing their ability to perform a wide variety of tasks. Recently, the implementation of mobile conferencing using smart glasses enabled amazing see-what-I-see and augmented reality applications with the promise of advancing enterprise communications across industries. Field personnel are no longer “on their own” when they leave the office. EMTs can be advised by specialists in real time. Site surveys and structural inspections provide immediate feedback to engineers.
In a recent blog, Vidyo reported that "applications range from remote expert assisted field service, surgical tele-mentoring, first responders for telestroke, real-time virtual real estate tours, retail product demonstrations, law enforcement and military missions." In every case, the ability to see as well as hear what is happening in the field greatly enhances productivity and outcome.
This technology is available NOW, using existing 3G/4G networks and WiFi.
2. Video-Enhanced Customer Engagement for eCommerce
As Vidyo also noted in their blog, "eCommerce has become a double edged sword for enterprise. On one hand, it provides customers with the convenience they demand for anytime, anywhere access to the enterprise’s offerings. On the other hand, eCommerce has turned the enterprise into a faceless web presence that breaks the personal relationship with the customer which is vital to brand loyalty."
Video Conferencing technology is changing the game.
When a live video presence is added into the standard customer service experience, companies can now easily deliver the convenience customers, AND the personal touch and service that leads to brand loyalty.
Video Conferencing is still a preferred method of communication in boardrooms and training centers worldwide, and technology continues to enhance that experience. But the ability to use secure video to communicate outside of the office is an exciting, evolving field.
