IMS has been working with West Chester University of Pennsylvania to provide a range of AV Integration, including classroom upgrades, digital migration, new EO Bull Arts center, and distance learning.

Challenge

Scott Davis, Director of venue management, Todd Williams Technical Director and WCU’s Technology team met with IMS AV to provide a needs analysis and video upgrade recommendations 

• Given that the concert hall was built in 1927, architectural limitations had to be factored in while maintaining theatre aesthetics
• The project required an HD projector with a single lens that could handle a 78’ or 102’ throw distance from our mounting location
• 160” X 284” HD electric screen weight approx. ½ ton
• Utilize existing conduit to run Cat5 cabling for video

Project Highlights

The first project hurdle was to determine the best location to mount the projector. Structural support had to be determined and in place, along with line of sight and visibility. In conclusion it was determined to mount the projector in front of the second floor balcony ledge. This provided the structural support needed, power requirements, and allowed for easy cable management. The location allowed for us to use one special zoom lens for a 78’ throw distance to the 160” X 284” screen or a 102’ throw distance to the approximately 32’ x 20’ sky cyclorama backdrop. Logistics to deliver the ½ ton screen took some work. Ultimately, a team of IMS technicians and staff used some creative maneuvering to deliver the screen.

Project required very detailed planning and budgeting processes surrounding several key topics:

• Analog (VGA) and Digital (HDMI) connection points at stage and tech booth
• HD scaler to match all source resolutions and utilize HD projection
• Hard wired projection remote for booth staff to control projector

Result

Successful video upgrade and satisfied theater staff
